The Name of Jesus: Understanding the Power and Authority Behind His Name

healing

Have you ever wondered why the name of Jesus is so important? Why do believers end their prayers with “in Jesus’ name”? Is His name simply a phrase we attach to our requests, or is there something much greater behind it?

Many believers call on the name of Jesus without fully appreciating the person behind the name. The more we know Jesus, the more we understand the authority and power His name carries.

The name of Jesus is not an ordinary name. To understand its significance, we must first understand who He is.

The Name Is Only as Understood as the Person Behind It

Isaiah 9:6 gives us a prophetic picture of Jesus:

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (NKJV)

Jesus is called by many names, each revealing something about who He is. But when the angel announced His earthly birth, a particular name was given to Him.

Matthew 1:21 says:

“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” (NKJV)

The name Jesus reveals His assignment as Saviour. He came to save His people from their sins.

But there is something else we must understand: a name becomes more meaningful when you know the person behind it.

Think about what happens when you mention your family name in a place where someone knows your family. That name may immediately open a door, establish a connection or command recognition because of the person associated with it.

In the same way, understanding the name of Jesus requires knowing who Jesus is. When you know Him, you begin to appreciate why His name carries such authority.

The Name of Jesus Is Above Every Other Name

Philippians 2:9 says:

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,” (NKJV)

Jesus did not receive this exalted position by accident. The preceding verses describe how He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Because of this, God highly exalted Him.

His name is above every other name because of who He is and the position He occupies.

Hebrews 1:4 also declares that Jesus has become much better than the angels, having obtained a more excellent name than they. He is not merely another spiritual being among many. He is superior to the angels.

He is also greater than Moses, whom Scripture describes as faithful in God’s house. Hebrews 3:3 explains that Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has more honour than the house itself.

Even Abraham, the father of faith, looked forward to the day of Jesus. In John 8:58, Jesus declared:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (NKJV)

Jesus existed before Abraham. He was not merely a historical figure who appeared at a particular point in time. He existed before the world began.

John 1:3 tells us that all things were made through Him. Colossians 1:16–17 further explains that all things were created through Him and for Him, and that in Him all things consist.

Consider what this means for your faith. The One whose name you call upon is the Creator. Nothing in creation is beyond His ability to handle. If He created all things, He can fix all things.

Faith in His Name Can Change Your Situation

One of the clearest illustrations of the power of Jesus’ name is found in Acts 3.

Peter and John encountered a man who had been lame from birth at the gate of the temple called Beautiful. The man looked at them, expecting to receive something from them.

Peter had no silver or gold to give him, but he had something else.

Acts 3:6 records Peter’s words:

“In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” (NKJV)

Peter did not offer the man money. He ministered to him in the name of Jesus, and the man received strength.

Later, Peter explained what had happened. Acts 3:16 says that faith in the name of Jesus had made the man strong.

This is an important lesson. Peter did not direct attention to himself or claim that the miracle happened because of his personal ability. He pointed to the name of Jesus and faith in that name.

The name was not an empty expression. It represented the authority of the One Peter trusted.

This challenges us to examine our own understanding. Do we call upon the name of Jesus with an awareness of who He is, or have we become so accustomed to saying His name that we have lost sight of its significance?

His Name Is Superior to Every Storm

The authority of Jesus is not limited to the healing of the sick. The Scriptures also show His authority over the forces of nature.

In Mark 4, Jesus and His disciples were in a boat when a great windstorm arose. The waves beat into the boat, and the disciples became afraid. Jesus arose and rebuked the wind and spoke to the sea.

Mark 4:41 records their response:

“And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, ‘Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!’” (NKJV)

They had witnessed something that made them question who Jesus truly was.

The wind and sea obeyed Him because His authority was greater than the storm.

You may not be facing a storm on the sea, but perhaps you are dealing with a difficult situation in your family, business or another area of your life. The lesson from this account is to recognise the authority of Jesus rather than allow the appearance of the storm to determine the strength of your faith.

The storm may be real, but it is not greater than the Lord.

As believers, we must learn to see our circumstances in the light of who Jesus is. Our confidence is not in the absence of difficulties but in the authority of the One we trust.

His Name Is Superior to Sickness and Demons

Acts 10:38 describes how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

The ministry of Jesus demonstrated His authority over sickness and demonic oppression. His works revealed the power of God operating through Him.

The Gospel also shows that demons recognised Jesus and responded to His authority. In Luke 10:17, the disciples returned rejoicing that even the demons were subject to them through His name.

These accounts reveal why the name of Jesus matters so much to believers. His name is associated with the authority of the One who healed the oppressed, commanded storms and demonstrated power over demonic forces.

We must not treat His name casually. The more we understand Jesus, the more confidently we can trust in His authority.

The Name of Jesus Is More Than a Prayer Ending

For many believers, the name of Jesus is something they use almost exclusively in prayer. They present their requests to God and conclude by saying, “In Jesus’ name.”

There is nothing wrong with praying in His name. Jesus Himself taught His disciples to ask the Father in His name.

However, as Dr. Olasoji explains, the use of Jesus’ name is not limited to prayer.

Consider Peter’s encounter with the lame man. Peter did not address the Father with a request. He spoke directly to the man and declared, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

This was an example of exercising the authority associated with Jesus’ name, rather than simply ending a prayer.

Jesus also taught about speaking to a mountain in faith and commanding it to be removed (Mark 11:23). These passages point to a dimension of the believer’s understanding that goes beyond using His name as a closing phrase in prayer.

We need to understand the difference between asking the Father in Jesus’ name and addressing a situation in His name. Both passages deserve careful attention as we learn what it means to use His name according to the Scriptures.

The name of Jesus is not a formula or a collection of words to repeat mechanically. Its significance is rooted in the person and authority of Jesus Himself.

There Is No Other Name That Can Save

Beyond all the demonstrations of authority and power, we must never lose sight of the central purpose of Jesus’ name: Salvation.

Matthew 1:21 tells us that He was given the name Jesus because He would save His people from their sins.

Acts 4:12 makes this truth unmistakably clear:

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (NKJV)

Salvation is found in Jesus alone. No other name can take His place.

This is why understanding His name is so important. We are not dealing with a mere religious expression or a historical figure whose influence has faded with time. We are talking about the Saviour, the Creator and the exalted Lord.

The name of Jesus should therefore mean more to us than a phrase we repeat out of habit. It should remind us of the One in whom we have placed our faith and the authority He possesses.

How Well Do You Know the Name You Call Upon?

The next time you pray in the name of Jesus, pause and consider the One whose name you are invoking.

Remember that He is the Saviour who came to deliver people from their sins. He is the One through whom all things were created. He is greater than angels, greater than Moses and greater than every storm. His name is above every other name.

Let this understanding strengthen your confidence in Him. Rather than allowing difficult circumstances to define what you believe is possible, learn to view those circumstances in the light of who Jesus is.

The more you know Him, the more you will appreciate His name. And the more you appreciate His name, the less likely you are to treat it as an ordinary expression.

The name of Jesus is not ordinary because the Person behind it is not ordinary.

Your Next Step: Put His Name to Work

Start with the situation before you right now. Bring it to God in prayer, trusting in who Jesus is and the authority of His name. As you study His Word, learn to recognise when to pray to the Father in Jesus’ name and when to speak to a situation in faith, as Peter did in Acts 3:6.

Do not just repeat His name out of habit. Know the One you are calling upon, believe His Word, and act in faith.
